7 Halloween Pet Safety Tips to Keep Your Dogs & Cats Safe
Halloween is full of tricks, treats, and spooky fun — but for our four-legged family members, it can also bring some unexpected dangers!
At Night Watch Elite Animal Emergency in San Antonio, Texas, we know your pets are family. From tempting candy bowls to glowing decorations and unfamiliar visitors, Halloween presents several hazards that pet owners should know about.
The good news? A few simple precautions and Halloween pet safety tips can help keep your dogs and cats safe throughout the festivities!
Here are 7 important Halloween pet safety tips to help your furry friends enjoy a happy, healthy, and fright-free holiday.

1. Beware of Halloween Candy & Chocolate
Halloween candy may be a favorite treat for humans, but some sweets can be extremely dangerous for pets.
Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, especially dark chocolate and baking chocolate, which contain higher concentrations of theobromine and caffeine. Chocolate poisoning can cause vomiting, restlessness, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, and even seizures.
Sugar-free candy and gum can be especially dangerous for dogs if they contain xylitol, a sweetener that can cause a rapid, life-threatening drop in blood sugar and potentially liver damage.
Safety Tip: Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and leftover Halloween sweets securely stored where curious paws and noses can’t reach them.
If your pet eats chocolate or candy containing xylitol, contact a veterinarian immediately or contact poison control, rather than waiting for symptoms.
2. Watch Out for Candy Wrappers & Lollipop Sticks
It’s not just what’s inside the candy that can be dangerous!
Dogs and cats may accidentally swallow candy wrappers, foil, plastic packaging, and lollipop sticks while investigating Halloween treats.
These items can cause choking, gastrointestinal irritation, or potentially serious intestinal blockages.
Safety Tip: Dispose of candy wrappers promptly and keep trash cans securely covered. If your pet swallows packaging or a stick, contact your veterinarian for guidance.
3. Cats and Glow Sticks Don’t Mix!
Here’s a Halloween hazard many pet owners don’t know about!
Cats are often fascinated by glowing bracelets, necklaces, and glow sticks. Unfortunately, chewing or puncturing these decorations can lead to an unpleasant surprise.
The bitter liquid inside can cause sudden, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, gagging, and agitation.
While most glow-stick liquid exposures are not seriously poisonous, they can cause significant irritation. Swallowed plastic pieces may also create additional risks.
Safety Tip: Keep glow sticks and glow jewelry away from pets, especially curious cats. If your pet bites into one, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control service for advice.
4. Choose Pet-Friendly Costumes & Decorations
Halloween costumes and decorations can be adorable, but they’re not always pet-friendly!
Fake spiderwebs, electrical cords, small decorations, loose costume accessories, and batteries can pose choking, electrical, or ingestion hazards.
If you’re dressing up your dog or cat, make sure the costume:
- Fits comfortably without restricting movement or breathing.
- Doesn’t obstruct vision or hearing.
- Has no small pieces that could be chewed off or swallowed.
- Doesn’t cause anxiety or distress.
Safety Tip: Never leave a costumed pet unattended. If your furry friend seems uncomfortable, skip the costume and try a festive collar or bandana instead!
5. Keep Pets Secure During Trick-or-Treating
Ding-dong! Halloween night means lots of visitors, unusual costumes, unfamiliar noises, and doors constantly opening and closing.
Even normally calm dogs and cats can become frightened and unexpectedly dash outside.
Safety Tip: Create a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door where your pet can relax during trick-or-treating.
Make sure your pet’s identification tags and microchip information are up to date, just in case an accidental escape occurs.
6. Give Cats Extra Attention on Halloween
Halloween can be particularly stressful for cats, especially those sensitive to loud noises, unfamiliar people, and changes in their environment.
Keep all cats, including black cats, safely indoors and away from busy Halloween activities.
Be mindful of candles, decorative pumpkins, glow sticks, dangling decorations, and anything else a curious cat might investigate.
Safety Tip: Replace traditional candles with battery-operated alternatives to reduce the risk of burns or fires from a knocked-over jack-o’-lantern.
A cozy hiding spot, favorite blanket, and familiar surroundings can also help anxious cats feel more secure.
7. Know What to Do in a Halloween Pet Emergency
Even with the best precautions, accidents can happen.
If you suspect your dog or cat has eaten chocolate, sugar-free candy, a toxic substance, or a potentially dangerous object, don’t wait for symptoms to appear before seeking veterinary advice.
Take these important steps:
- Remove access to the candy, decoration, or suspected hazard.
- Save the packaging or identify what your pet may have swallowed.
- Estimate how much was consumed and when.
- Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control service immediately.
- Never induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinary professional.
Prompt veterinary care can make a significant difference when dealing with poisoning or foreign-object ingestion.
